<br />ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION <br />This is a three story Neo Classical Style school building. It has an irregular plan, <br />concrete foundation and rear brick addition. The walls are made of red brick <br />with corner brick quoins and stone garlands above the front portico, around the <br />oval window and in all recessed porticos. The central portion of the structure <br />has a gable pitch with stone frieze and partial returns, while the wings have flat <br />roofs with brick balustrade that are topped by stone trim. The end pavilions <br />have gable roofs with stone frieze. The building also boasts a New England style <br />cupola atop the central roof which has a brick base, stone garlands, a clock, <br />wooden urns, wooden towers with vented sides, wooden balustrade topped by a <br />copper dome and weather vane finial. The main entry contains double leafed <br />wood paneling, fanlights above six over six double hung sashes on top each <br />door. The remaining portion of the structure has six over six double hung <br />windows with stone sills, flat arches and keystones. The wing additions to the <br />building contain eight Palladian windows, four in either wing, with false iron <br />balconies above stone sills, arched brick voussoirs and keystones. The structure <br />also boasts a five bay colossal order portico located in the central portion of the <br />building, with tapered, stone columns, papyrus capitals and stone entablature. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Based on the Historic Preservation Commission's Local Landmark Criteria's <br />adopted by the Common Council, the building at 528 S. Eddy has been <br />recommended to the Common Council for designation as a Local Landmark by <br />Historic Preservation Commission. <br />The building meets the criteria in at least three areas: <br />1.) its embodiment of elements of architectural design, detail, materials, or <br />craftsmanship which represents an architectural characteristic or innovation. <br />2.) Its suitability for preservation. <br />3.) Its character, interest, or value as art of the development, heritage, or culture <br />of the City of South Bend, St. Joseph County, the State of Indiana, or the United <br />States of America. <br />The building fulfills criteria #1 as an excellent example of a Neo Classical style, <br />1930s School Building. The building is rated a significant twelve in the Indiana <br />Historic Sites and Structures Inventory. <br />The building fulfills criteria #2 by the integrity of its original construction with <br />virtually no changes to the facade.
