DESCRIPTION OF THE CITY <br />Location <br />The City of South Bend is located in St. Joseph County in north central Indiana near the <br />border of the State of Michigan. South Bend is approximately 140 miles north of Indianapolis, <br />Indiana and approximately 90 miles east of Chicago, Illinois. <br />Government <br />The City of South Bend has eleven elected officials: the Mayor, the Common Council, <br />including council members covering six districts and three council members at large, and the <br />City Clerk. <br />The South Bend Police Department consists of 260 sworn officers and 102 civilian <br />employees.
