Resolution No. 3184 -03 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, <br />INDIANA, FORMALLY RECOGNIZING NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION WEEK AND <br />THE SOUTH BEND PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION CORPORATION ( TRANSPO) <br />Vbgrg0g, the South Bend Common Council notes that in 1962 President John F. <br />Kennedy declared that the 3rd week in May of each year would be National Transportation <br />Week which would be an opportunity to celebrate achievements in transportation; and <br />WbItM$, the Council notes that after housing, transportation accounts for an annual <br />household expense of 33% for the average American; that the number of vehicles using roads <br />and streets throughout the United States has increased by 40.6% since 1978; and that the travel <br />industry employs over 9.7 million people; and <br />'Q 1*Caig, May 25, 2003, will mark the 118th anniversary of public transportation in the <br />South Bend - Mishawaka community with streetcars being first used and by 1920 the South <br />Bend Motor Bus service began and charged an 8 cent fare, with the electric streetcars being <br />totally retired from service on June 15, 1940; and <br />'QH 69V90S, in 1967 the South Bend Public Transportation Corporation was formally <br />established and maintained the 30 cent fare which was first established in 1964; and <br />VbtrCag, in 1998 TRANSPO's South Street Station transfer center opened as an integral <br />part of a planned intermodal network designed to better serve transportation needs and that <br />same year BOLT, the Battery Operated Local Transit shuttle began service in the city; and <br />'Q bIM900, in 2002 TRANSPO introduced bike racks and on April 28, 2003, TRANSPO <br />received a $5.4 million federal grant for the replacement of the 23 flexible diesel buses so that <br />the total fleet of 52 buses may operate more efficiently as they operate 17 routes while <br />transporting over 2.5 million passengers annually. <br />Motu, *rdore, be it molUO bV * Common Council of * GCitp of 95outb <br />�Smb, lubiatna, go follows: <br />Section I. On behalf of all the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the Common <br />Council hereby publicly recognizes National Transportation Week and commends TRANSPO <br />for the many fine quality services it provides to our community. <br />Section II. In addition to providing quality transportation service with a fleet which <br />includes improved accessibility for persons with disabilities and cleaner- burning engines, <br />TRANSPO is a true partner with the City of South Bend, and has often provided transportation <br />for individuals who are displaced from their homes due to fires; transported the Chamber <br />Leadership Program members, transported many of the South Bend Firefighters for fire <br />department funerals; and transports obese medical patients with paramedics in their specialized <br />buses -- -with these being just some of the many exceptional services provided by TRANSPO. <br />Section III. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its adoption by <br />the Common Council and approval by the Mayor. <br />Loretta J.
