Resolution No. 32-e3 —03 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, <br />INDIANA, HONORING HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS AMY MARSH, MICHAEL CWIDAK- <br />KUSBACH, AND SPENCER MCCOLLESTER FOR WINNING THE 2003 NATIONAL <br />COUNCIL OF TEACHERS OF ENGLISH ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS IN WRITING <br />Vbert49, the Common Council notes that there are three very talented high school <br />seniors who recently had their writing talents nationally recognized; and <br />WIMM, our community is indeed fortunate and enriched by the fact that three of the <br />seventeen Indiana high school students who received the 2003 National Council of Teachers of <br />English Achievement Awards in Writing were from two of our local high schools; and <br />'Di bV MU, the Common Council proudly recognizes and honors AMY MARSH, a senior <br />at ADAMS HIGH SCHOOL, who wrote an analysis of whether literary works adapted for the <br />silver screen dilute the spirit of the original author's writing; and submitted her personal writing <br />sample on keeping the Shabbat, the Jewish Sabbath, with her divorced parents ; and <br />Vbgr¢as, the Common Council proudly recognizes and honors MICHAEL CWiDAK- <br />KusBAcH, a senior at ADAMS HIGH SCHOOL, who wrote that "every work has its own <br />soul ... when you borrow a soul, it only degrades it. You can't change certain elements of a <br />story and expect it to be the same "; and submitted his personal writing sample on a character <br />analysis of Heathcliff from Emily Bronte's 19th century novel Wuthering Heights; and <br />"D 69M S, the Common Council proudly recognizes and honors SPENCER <br />MCCOLLESTER, a senior at Sr. JOSEPH HIGH SCHOOL, who wrote about suicide; and for <br />his personal writing sample submitted an essay on what he has learned from his grandfather. <br />Xow, *rc£or¢> k it rns va bg * Common Coma of the (Cup of gboutb <br />WO, 30taua, as follows: <br />Section I. On behalf of all of the citizens of South Bend, Indiana, the Common Council <br />hereby publicly honors AMY MARSH, OF ADAMS HIGH SCHOOL; MICHAEL CWIDAK- <br />KusBACH, OF ADAMS HIGH SCHOOL; AND SPENCER MCCOLLESTER OF ST. JOSEPH <br />HIGH SCHOOL for bringing honor to themselves, their teachers, their respective high schools, <br />and the entire South Bend Community, for being selected from over 2,400 nominees to be <br />three of the best high school writers in America with this honor being bestowed by the <br />National Council of Teachers of English (NOTE). <br />Section II. The Common Council is proud to salute the parents, relatives, friends, teachers <br />and administrators for providing encouragement to each of these local high school seniors; and <br />wishes AMY, MICHAEL AND SPENCER the very best as each of them pursues their future <br />academic dreams in higher education and sincerely hopes that each of them will return to the <br />South Bend so that they will continue to enrich our community with their talents. <br />Section IV.
