CITY OF SOUTH BEND
STEPHEN J. LUECKE, MAYOR
OFFICE OF THE MAYOR
March 17, 2004
Ms. Karen White, President
South Bend Common Council
4`I' Floor County -City Building
South Bend, IN 46601
RE: Homestead Resolution
Dear Ms. White:
Attached is a Resolution which should be welcome to members of the South Bend
Common Council. It endorses an ordinance of the St. Joseph County Income Tax Council to
increase the percentage allowed for homesteads in St. Joseph County. This will provide needed
property tax relief to South Bend homeowners.
The process for increasing the homestead exemption is prescribed by Indiana statute and
requires approval of the members of the County Tax Council. The St. Joseph County Council
cast its 38.72 votes in favor of the Tax Council's homestead exemption ordinance by unanimous
(8 - 0) vote on March 9, 2004. The City of South Bend has 40.59 votes on the County Tax
Council, and the proposed Resolution casts all those votes in favor of increasing the homestead
exemption to its maximum level. If this Resolution is passed by the South Bend Common
Council at its March 22, 2004 meeting, it will be timely.
I will attend the Council's committee meeting to answer any questions you may have and
will also introduce the Resolution at the Council's regular meeting. Thank you for joining this
property tax relief effort.
Sincerely,
In clerk's Off cs
J.
Mayor I I MAR 1 7 2004
COUNTY -CITY BUILDING • SOUTH BEND, INDIANA 4660
PHONE 574/235 -9261 • FAx 574/235 -9892 • TDD 574/2
