RESOLUTION NO.
<br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA,
<br />HONORING THE
<br />INDIANA UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION ON ITS 150TH ANNIVERSARY
<br />Wlww,aa, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, recognizes that on May 1,
<br />1824, between thirty and forty students arrived at the "State Seminary" in Bloomington, Indiana, to
<br />begin their studies, with this educational institution later being renamed to be Indiana University; and
<br />Wemm , the Common Council further recognizes that Indiana University has grown to have
<br />approximately 98,000 students on eight (8) campuses across the state of Indiana; and
<br />< xeaa, the Indiana University Alumni Association will celebrate its 150`x' anniversary on
<br />August 2, 2004, with more than 200,000 IU alumni currently working in the state of Indiana; and
<br />l4�lzeireaa, the Common Council is also proud to acknowledge that the IUSB Alumni
<br />Association, a constituency of the IU Alumni Association was founded in 1974 as the I" regional IU
<br />campus alumni association; and has grown to have more than 25,000 alumni with approximately 67%
<br />remaining in the South Bend area to live and work as community leaders, health care professionals,
<br />artists, public servants and involved citizens dedicated to making our community a better place; and
<br />M7,exeaa, 35% of the teachers, 64% of the optometrists, 75% of the attorneys and 90% of the
<br />dentists in Indiana are IU alumni; and that the current South Bend Common Council notes that Council
<br />Members Derek D. Dieter, Charlotte D. Pfeifer, Ann Puzzello, Dr. David A. Varner, Al "Buddy"
<br />Kirsits, and Karen L. White, and City Clerk John Voorde each have an IU connection as a result of
<br />their individual studies.

<br />as follows:
<br />Section I. On behalf of all of the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the Common
<br />Council hereby publicly commends and congratulates Indiana University Alumni Association as it
<br />begins a series of celebrations marking its 150`h anniversary. These celebrations are resulting in IU
<br />alumni being decked out in crimson outfits being seen throughout the state of Indiana and the country
<br />as the festivities continue during the rest of this calendar year.
<br />Section II. The South Bend Common Council notes with pride that IU alumni have been a
<br />positive and instrumental force for the enrichment of lives in many areas; and that the IU South Bend
<br />alumni in particular have been innovative community partners in contributing their many talents for the
<br />betterment of our neighborhoods, businesses, and governmental services.
<br />Section III . This Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its adoption by the
<br />Council and approval by tie ayor.
