RESOLUTION NO. 3403 -04 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, PUBLICLY <br />SUPPORTING THE FUNDING FOR THE RENOVATION OF THE ASSOCIATES FOR <br />INDIANA UNIVERSITY SOUTH BEND <br />Wklmaa, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, recognizes that Indiana <br />University South Bend is the only public, comprehensive, master's and bachelor's degree granting <br />institution of high education in northern Indiana; and <br />W/w�read, the Common Council notes that IU South Bend currently has enrolled 7,501 <br />students and is continuing to experience enrollment growth which is projected to continue; and <br />lwk"Iaa, an expansion program at IU South Bend began ten years ago and is in need of state <br />funding to complete the renovation of the Associates Building into the Indiana University South Bend <br />Education and Arts Building so that it will continue to addressed challenges of the 215` century; and <br />!�!� wlxe, , the Common Council acknowledges that an $27.8 million renovation request is <br />being made in the 2005 -2007 biennium of the Indiana General Assembly and the Governor of Indiana, <br />with this request being the only one for a single regional IU campus. <br />ors G%L")6 e, tieWweao/irs , by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, <br />as follows: <br />Section I. On behalf of all of the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the Common <br />Council hereby publicly supports the funding request of IU South Bend for the renovation of the <br />Associates Building; specifically noting that IU South Bend is the 9th largest employer in St. Joseph <br />County and contributes over $60 million annually to our community's economy. <br />Section II. The South Bend Common Council notes that the proposed renovation would be a <br />more cost effective than building a new building, and would then be the home to three (3) schools at <br />IU South Bend, namely the School of Education, Fine Arts from the Ernestine M. Raclin School of <br />Arts, and the dental programs from the School of Nursing and Health Professions. <br />Section III. The Council believes that if the funding request is approved, thai approximately <br />2,000 students would be able to use the renovated facility which would house high -tech classrooms, <br />computer labs, conference rooms, a 130 -seat lecture hall, rehearsal rooms, photography lab, painting <br />and drawing studios, video labs, dental hygiene clinics, patient consultation areas, and related offices. <br />Section IV.
