<br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA,
<br />DECLARING THE MONTH OF MARCH 2005 AS DISABILITY AWARENESS MONTH AND
<br />COMMENDING THE LEGAL SERVICES PROGRAM OF NORTHERN INDIANA, INC., GOODWILL
<br />MUSTRIES OF MICHIANA, INC., VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION SERVICES AND THE IU SOUTH
<br />BEND OFFICE OF DISABLED STUDENT SERVICES FOR THEIR MANY
<br />PROGRAMS AND SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
<br />Wegwaa, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, notes that the Americans With
<br />Disabilities Act of 1990 has provided a federal mandate for the "elimination of discrimination against
<br />individuals with disabilities; and
<br />Offl&meu, the Common Council would like to highlight and thank four (4) local entities who are
<br />working each day in our community to assist people with disabilities, namely the Legal Services Program
<br />of Northern Indiana, Inc., Goodwill Industries of Michiana, Inc., Vocational Rehabilitation Services,
<br />and the IU South Bend Office of Disabled Student Services; and
<br />!'llAew,mb, the Council notes that Legal Services Program of Northern Indiana, Inc. provides
<br />services for the elderly, neighborhood mediation, and many other legal services in Elkhart, Jasper,
<br />Kosciusko, LaGrange, LaPorte, Marshall, Noble, Pulaski, Starke and St. Joseph Counties; and
<br />ff lcixnao, the Council notes that Goodwill Industries of Michiana, Inc. has provided a full range of
<br />employment services for individuals with disabilities since 1975, and are dedicated to providing training and
<br />support so that such individuals may realize their dreams; and
<br />i /n ,aa, the Council notes that the Vocational Rehabilitation Services for Area 4 of the Indiana
<br />Family and Social Services Administration focus on community-based services which include health care
<br />and community living support for the developmentally disabled, while providing vocational rehabilitation for
<br />the blind, deaf and hard -of- hearing; and
<br />1zPixnae, the Council notes that the IU South Bend Office of Disabled Student Services delivers a
<br />full range of support services to students with disabilities, providing equal access to the education process
<br />with such services including oral interpreters, Braille transcription, alternative testing & mobility assistance.

<br />follows:
<br />Section I. On behalf of all of the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the Common Council
<br />hereby declares the month of March, 2005 as Disability Awareness Month.
<br />Section II. The South Bend Common Council publicly honors and thanks the following entities for
<br />their many contributions in assisting the disabled in our community, namely: the Legal Services Program of
<br />Northern Indiana, Inc., Goodwill Industries of Michiana, Inc., Vocational Rehabilitation Services, and
<br />the IU South Bend Office of Disabled Student Services.
