lax haven - The Yale Herald <br />and $500,000 to the township, but when <br />negotiations over a proposed $300 million <br />arts complex ground to a halt with local <br />officials, the university sought to turn up the <br />pressure by threatening to withhold these <br />voluntary payments. "It would be difficult to <br />justify continuing contributions at existing <br />levels to local officials who not only refuse to <br />help the university achieve a key educational <br />objective, but in some cases have sought to <br />prevent the project from going forward," <br />Robert K. Durkee, the university's vice <br />president and secretary, told the New York <br />Times in May 2011. The Princeton Regional <br />Planning Board has since approved the plan, <br />voting nine to one in favor of allowing the <br />university to move forward. <br />The city officials I spoke to were hesitant to <br />demand more from Yale. "It's 100 percent fair," <br />Doug Hausladen, New Haven Ward 7 <br />Alderman, said of Yale's property tax <br />exemption. "They're following the law," he <br />added. Smuts, the city's chief administrative <br />officer, said he would appreciate more money <br />from the university, but argued that it was not <br />Yale's responsibility to contribute more. "As an <br />administrator here in the city, if the university <br />were willing to pay more I'd love that.
