We felt from the <br />start we had to make a serious commitment to <br />be a good partner and a good neighbor." <br />No longer would the University so doggedly <br />avoid making financial contributions to support <br />the financial health of the city. Instead, <br />administrators decided that if Yale was going <br />to keep its streets safe —not to mention <br />compete with Harvard and Princeton for <br />students —then it was going to have to assume <br />some responsibility for its surroundings. The <br />voluntary payments began in 1991 (initially <br />justified as compensation for the fire services <br />the city had been providing for the university) <br />and Yale is very proud of its track record since <br />then. "No city in the country receives more <br />dollars that allow it to provide services to <br />residents because it's the home of a non - profit <br />university than New Haven does," said <br />Michael Morand, SY '87 DIV '93, deputy <br />communications officer in Yale's office of <br />public affairs and communications.
