(� — <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, <br />PUBLICLY HONORING DEB MARTIN, THE PRINCIPAL OF MADISON PRIMARY CENTER FOR <br />WINNING THE 2014 INDIANA GOVERNOR & CHERI DANIELS SCHOOL HEALTH AWARD <br />CIS, the South Bend Common Council notes that in 2012 the Indiana Governor and Cheri Daniels <br />School Health Award was created to recognize Indiana Governor and Mrs. Daniels leadership and many <br />contributions to the health of Indiana residents through their work of building and promoting INShape, the Health <br />Indiana Plan, and their tireless efforts to promote healthy initiatives in schools throughout the state; and <br />the Common Council further recognizes that this award recognizes individuals who are "strong <br />advocates for student health or a healthy school environment and have made outstanding contributions..." ; and <br />6)1" the South Bend Common Council is honored to recognize Deb Martin, the Principal of Madison <br />Primary Center of the South Bend Community School Corporation, who was selected to be the winner of the <br />2014 Indiana Governor & Cheri Daniels School Health Award. Some of Mrs. Martin's many exemplary health <br />initiatives at both McKinley and Madison Primary Centers include: <br />• Kicking off the "Let's Move Campaign" in conjunction with South Bend's "Let's Move City" <br />• Teaming with community leaders to participate in the National Walk/Bike to School Dav <br />• Starting the "Breakfast in the Classroom" program <br />• Making key school procedural changes such as moving lunch to after recess, implementing the CATCH <br />program to insure physical activity during recess and removing physical activity as a disciplinary action <br />• Creating the largest school garden program in the District by collaborating with parents, church groups, <br />businesses, not - for - profit agencies, local government and local media <br />• Raising awareness for the disabled so that raised garden boxes would be accessible for their participation <br />• Having students document by journaling their experiences on gardening so that they could plan, measure, <br />and teach one another about basic gardening techniques <br />• Created a fresh fruit and produce bar for students <br />Section I. The Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, publicly honors DEB MARTIN , Principal <br />of Madison Primary Center, this year's winner of the Governor & Cheri Daniels School Health Award. <br />Section II. Under Mrs. Martin's leadership. McKinley Primary Center won the Healthier US School Challenge <br />Gold of Distinction Aware in 2013, which was the first of only two (2) schools in Indiana to o red. <br />Section III. The Common Council believes that DEB MARTIN epitomizes cellence and ishes her continued <br />success in her career as she dedicates her creative passions and energies to educatin our youth.
