Dieter Contact: 532-2200
South Bend City Council Vice-President
Marquette Primary School Being Honored Today by
South Bend City Council Members
Today at 1:40 p.m. a PRESS CONFERENCE will be held at Marquette Primary
Montessori Academy located at 1818 Bergan.
South Bend City Council Vice-President Derek D. Dieter and I" District Council Member Tim
Scott will honor Marquette Primary School today at 1:40 p.m.
Marquette students have read the most books as part of the "Get Booked" program. Well over
100 students have read close to 1,000 books and completed book reports, with the exact number
of books being confirmed at the Press Conference.
In March of this year, Council Member Dieter passed out books to four (4) schools in South
Bend. In conjunction with Better World Books, when students would read five (5) books and
completed book reports, they would then receive either four (4) tickets to the KROC Center or
tickets to a South Bend Silver Hawks game. The four (4) schools included Holy Cross,
Marquette, Tarkington, and Muessel who had all of their students complete the project with over
400 tickets being passed out upon completing their reading and book report requirements.
At the present time, Marquette has had the most students finish this project. As a result,
Marquette School will be invited to throw out the first pitch at a Silver Hawks game at Four
Winds Field when school resumes this August.
As a pilot project this year, Dieter and Better World books will attempt to expand this project
into all South Bend schools next year. This summer, Council Member Dieter will also go to all
of the lunch programs in City Parks throughout South Bend and expand the "Get Booked"
program to all youth who are attending the lunch program. Council Members from all six (6) of
the South Bend Council Districts will also be invited. Congratulations Marquette book readers!
