The initiative is an effort to improve the role of streets in the
community by making existing streets more accessible to all types of users. The
conversion of one way streets to two way is a major part of the initiative with work
underway on Phase 1- William and Lafayette Streets in downtown.
1 The next phase of the project involves the conversion of Main & Michigan Streets into two
way. In order to do this, southbound traffic from the Leepar Park Bridge must be
redistributed to other downtown streets. This redistribution is critical in creating a street
network with balanced traffic volumes. Engineering work on roundabouts at Bartlett St.
and Marion Streets is currently underway to create this redistribution. A similar strategy
is needed to redistribute northbound traffic by Michigan & Chippewa where the one-way
pair ends.
Several public conversations have taken place on the Smart Streets initiative since the
idea was first introduced in the fall of 2013. More recently a public meeting in May 2014,
introduced the overall plan to the general public. A public meeting was also held with
businesses and residents adjacent to the Michigan & Chippewa intersection on August
21, 2014.
The attached resolution and agency agreement authorize the Board of Public Works to
act as an agent of the Redevelopment Commission in overseeing the engineering and
A construction of the proposed roundabout on Chippewa.
Staff requests approval of $562,050 for professional services from the SSDA TIF for
engineering work related to the project as well as the attached resolution 3226 and the
j addendum to the agency agreement.
i
1
227 W.JEFFERSON BLVD.
