REGULAR MEETING SEPTEMBER 22, 2008 <br /> <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. 3905-08 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON <br /> COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH <br /> BEND, INDIANA PUBLICLY <br /> COMMENDING AND HONORING <br /> HOMETOWN HERO LEROY DIXON <br /> FOR PARTICIPATING IN THE 2008 <br /> SUMMER OLYMPICS HELD IN <br /> BEIJING, CHINA <br /> <br /> <br />Whereas, the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of <br />th <br />the XXIX Olympiad, took place in Beijing, People’s Republic of China from August 6 <br />through August 24, 2008; with a total of 10,500 athletes participating who represented <br />204 nations in 302 events; and <br /> <br />Whereas, the United States of America was represented in the 2008 Summer <br />Olympics by 596 athletes, one of which included our own hometown hero, Leroy Dixon; <br />and <br /> <br />Whereas, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, is especially <br />proud to recognize that on June 20, 1983, Leroy Dixon was born in South Bend to <br />Sherlyn and Leroy Dixon, Sr., and graduated from LaSalle High School in 2002 where he <br />lettered in track, basketball and football; and <br /> <br /> Whereas, Leroy Dixon went on to study at the Kansas City Community College <br />and at the University of South Carolina, where he earned his first All-American <br />certificate in the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Championships; and <br /> <br /> Whereas, in 2007, Leroy Dixon was the World Outdoor 4 x 100m gold medalist <br />and earned a spot on the Team USA 4 x 100m relay pool for the 2007 World Outdoor <br />Championships in Osaka, Japan, where he earned a gold medal by running the anchor leg <br />for Team USA during the opening round of competition in Osaka and in the final, <br />carrying the baton across the finish line and stopping the clocks in 37.78 seconds, which <br />was the fastest time in the world in 2007; and <br /> <br /> Whereas, the Common Council acknowledges that the United States of America <br />won 110 medals in this year’s Olympics with 36 being bronze, 38 being silver, and 36 <br />being gold; and is especially proud to further acknowledge that Leroy Dixon, as a <br />member of the USA 4 x 100m Men’s Relay Team. <br /> <br />Now, Therefore, be it resolved, by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, <br />Indiana, as follows: <br /> <br />Section I. On behalf of all of the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the <br />Common Council hereby publicly commends and honors our own hometown hero, Leroy <br />, <br />Dixon for his excellent work ethics, his dedication and discipline, and his superior <br />athletic abilities as evidenced by participating in the Summer Olympics held in Beijing, <br />China. <br /> <br />Section II. The South Bend Common Council is especially proud to recognize <br />, <br />and honor Leroy Dixonwho has brought the highest of honors to himself; his family and <br />friends; and the City of South Bend, Indiana. The Common Council sincerely wishes <br />Leroy Dixon continued success. <br /> <br /> Section III. This resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its <br />adoption by the Common Council and approval by the Mayor. <br /> <br />st <br />s/Derek D.
