�,O�TN RF <br />y <br />W <br />V {iY O <br />ltl6i 1 J V �" �hNELLtN,L' <br />RESOLUTION NO. <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, <br />INDIANA, HONORING THE RICH TRADITION OF THE NATIONAL PAN - HELLENIC COUNCIL <br />AND CELEBRATING 84 YEARS OF SERVICE AND CONTRIBUTIONS <br />6 the Common Council recognizes that the National Pan- Hellenic Council (NPHC) is a <br />collaborative organization of nine (9) historically African- American, international Greek lettered fraternities <br />and sororities with the permanent organization being formed at Howard University in Washington, D.C. on May <br />10, 1930; and with these organizations often being referred to as "The Divine Nine "; and <br />NPHC's purpose and mission is the "Unanimity of thought and action as far as possible in the <br />conduct of Greek letter collegiate fraternities and sororities, and to consider problems of mutual interest to its <br />member organizations" which is promoted through forums, meetings and other mediums for the exchange of <br />information, programming and outreach initiatives; and <br />G}e the local NPHC consists of 7 of the 9 Black Greek Letter Organizations,(BGLOs) namely: <br />Alpha Phi Alpha founded in 1906 at Cornell University; Alpha Kappa Alpha founded in 1908 at Howard <br />University; Kappa Alpha Psi founded in 1911 at Indiana University; Delta Sigma Theta founded in 1913 at <br />Howard University; Phi Beta Sigma founded in 1914 at Howard University; Zeta Phi Beta founded in 1920 at <br />Howard University; and Sigma Gamma Rho founded in 1922 at Butler University; with two other organizations <br />being Omega Psi Phi 1911 and Iota Phi Theta founded in 1963 at Morgan State University; and <br />the local NPHC is well known for its many programming and outreach opportunities with some <br />of these activities including the following: <br />• December 8, 2011, donated monies & equipment to the Boys & Girls Club of America <br />• December 15, 2013, donated monies to Pop Warner to assist in getting cheerleaders to the National <br />Convention in Florida for the first time <br />• February 22, 2014, in collaboration with Delta Sigma Theta and the Trio's Program (Upward Bound) <br />sponsored an education symposium <br />• March 8, 2014, helped sponsor the Healthy Alternatives symposium in collaboration with Sigma Gamma Rho <br />on youth exercise, healthy food and childhood obesity <br />• April 5, 2014, the Black Barbershop initiative took place in collaboration with the St. Joseph Minority Health <br />Coalition to raise awareness of checking for diabetes, promoting health BMI and raising awareness of getting <br />early prostate checks <br />• Annual Greek Divine 9 on the Island event to raise monies for many organizations such as the Boys and Girls <br />Club of America and providing high school hygiene items and other necessities. <br />Section I. The Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, publicly commends and honors the <br />National Pan - Hellenic Council for their eighty -four (84) years of service, outreach and service with many of <br />their national programming activities listed at http://www.nphehq.org/programs / <br />Section II. The Common Council recognizes the local Council's focus on service and scholarship and <br />its promotion of unity and exposure of members to the "service for life" philosophy in order to foster leadership <br />development and scholarship among The Divine Nine chapters which belong to the National Pan- Hellenic <br />Council. <br />Section III.
