let & Na Rt Dn �'� (° IS <br />COANiNTTEE OF THE WHOLE 6' I t A <br />PUBIIO HEARING b <br />3rd REABING <br />NOT A "PXOVEO <br />REFEM <br />PASSED <br />r..... ..... <br />MAY 2 3 '58 <br />: 2 <br />ORDIANANCE NO.' °Q <br />AN ORIIINANCE CONTROLLING THE OPERA ON -' <br />OF SELF - SERVICE LAUNDRIES <br />R <br />WHEREAS, it is imperative and urgent for the preservation of <br />health, safety, sanitation, peace and public welfare of the City of South Bend <br />that proper and adequate regulations be adopted to govern the installation and <br />operation of self - service laundries: <br />NOW, THEREFORE, be it ordained by the Common Council of <br />the City of South Bend that Ordinance No. 4200 be amended to read as follows: <br />SECTION I. Definitions. <br />(a) Operators. of Self - Service Laundries. The term t0operators <br />of self - service laundries" as used in this Article shall mean any person, <br />partnership, corporation or other business unit who keeps or maintains a <br />commercial establishment open to the general public, which establishment is <br />equipped with washing machines and /or drying machines for the purposes of <br />cleaning, washing and /or drying laundry and other materials, and which <br />washing and drying machines are self- operated by the general public upon <br />payment of a charge to an attendant or to a.coin collection mechanism. <br />(b) Self - service Laundries. The term ttself- service laundriest6 <br />as used in this article shall mean only such laundry establishments which <br />provide self - operated washing and /or drying facilities and which are open and available <br />to the general public. The term does not include any establishments wherein <br />the laundry services are performed by employees of the operator of the laundry <br />establishment, nor does this term as used herein include self- service laundry <br />facilities which are provided for or established in apartment or multiple- rental <br />units, as long as such self- service laundries are not open to the general public <br />and are restricted in their availability to the tenants or inhabitants of such <br />apartment or multiple- rental units. <br />SECTION II, Rules and Regulations for Installation, Maintenance and Operation. <br />(a) All self- service laundries shall be adequately lighted during all <br />business hours and at all areas to which the laundry equipment users have access. <br />(b) The floor under any installation of equipment must be adequately <br />supported to the end of prevention of possible breakage of gas and /or electric <br />lines through shifting or falling of the equipment. <br />(c) Dryers shall be installed with a clearance of not less than 18t° <br />between the exhaust ductwork and the inside surface of any wall. <br />(d) The installation of washing and /or drying equipment shall be <br />made to provide at least 1811 of aisle space in front of the washing and /or drying <br />units when the doors of said units are open to a 901 angle. <br />
