ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION <br />The property at 229 S. William is located on the northwest corner of S. William Street <br />and W. Wayne Street in South Bend, Indiana. It is described as the south 44.25' of lot 7 <br />and the 44.25' of the east 22.25' of lot 8 Vails Sub of Block 3 to South Bend, Indiana. <br />This is a two-story Italianate Style house with a rectangular plan, flat roof and <br />convoluted, bracketed cornice. The structure has one over one double hung windows <br />through out with two new, three over three, fixed window units in the first floor front <br />facade. The house boasts a wood frame front porch with a three bay, elaborate, <br />entablature frame supported by wood box columns, wood balustrades, brick foundation, <br />wood floor and concrete steps. The building also has two additions off the back. <br />With in the past 14 years the owners have sided the structure with vinyl siding <br />completely covering over the wide frieze board, two windows that were located on the <br />north elevation, all window hoods and the glass transom that used to be above the front <br />door. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Based on the Historic Preservation Commission's Local Landmark Criteria's adopted by <br />the Common Council, the site, structures and objects at 229 S. William has been <br />recommended to the Common Council for designation as a Local Landmark by the <br />Historic Preservation Commission. <br />The building, sites and objects meet the following three criteria: <br />1) Its embodiment of elements or architectural design, detail, material or <br />craftsmanship which represents an architectural characteristic or innovation; <br />2) Its suitability for preservation; <br />3) Its identif cation with the life of a person or persons of historical significance. <br />The structure fulfills criteria #1 as an example of a wood Italianate Style house of the <br />mid-1800s. The building has been re-rated by the Historic Preservation Commission to <br />an S/11, which will be reflected in the Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory at a <br />Later date. <br />The structure fulfills criteria #2 by its possession of classic Italianate style and features. <br />Although this house has been greatly altered it still retains the overall design and detail of <br />a true Italianate Revival Style house of the 1870s, with its elaborate porch, box shaped <br />body, flat roof, wide overhanging eaves and double brackets. This structure is still very <br />suitable for preservation as a good example of a very popular style ofmid-seventeenth <br />century architecture. <br />5 <br />
