�,, <br />'°' RESOLUTION NO. <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND <br />PUBLICLY COMMENDING IUSB PROFESSOR ELIZABETH BENNION WHO SERVES OUR <br />COMMUNITY THROUGH HER EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING, STUDENT - FACULTY <br />INTERACTION AND COLLABORATION IN LIFE-LONG LEARNING <br />.uc American journalist Jim Lehrer once said that "If we don't have an informed electorate we don't <br />have a democracy". There is truth in that democracy can only exist when the citizens of a democratic state are <br />willing and able to take an active role in their government; and <br />91, -..6 Indiana University South Bend (Ill South Bend) is a comprehensive undergraduate and <br />postgraduate campus that serves community through its excellence in teaching, student- faculty interaction, <br />research and creative activity, diversity and inclusivity, a global perspective, and collaboration in life -long <br />learning; and <br />*/A; -4 the Common Council recognizes that through the efforts of members of the IU South Bend <br />Faculty, many work to develop engaged citizens who are prepared to build strong communities; and <br />fir, IU South Bend Political Scieno Professor Elizabeth Bennion is an exceptional example of <br />excellence in teaching, student- faculty interaction and collaboration in life -long learning as evidenced by her <br />long list of accolades and awards including high honors such as: <br />• 2011 Eldon F. Lunquist Award which honors "excellence in teaching... community service" <br />• 2009 W. George Pinnel Award for Outstanding Service which honors "exceptional service...and /or the <br />community extending over a period of at least five years" <br />• 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009 American Political Science Association/Pi Sigma Alpha Teaching Award <br />• 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009 Indiana University Trustees' Teaching Award <br />• 2004 Selection to IU Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching (FACET) <br />• 2002 Who's Who Among America's Teachers <br />9l,6•.y Dr. Bennion is known for being very actively involved on many campus committees with some <br />of her leadership positions being the Campus Director of the American Democracy Project, the Coordinator for <br />the American Studies Program and is the Advisor of the Political Science Club; while also conducting extensive <br />research on a variety of topics; teaching; having many of her articles published in the Political Research <br />Quarterly, Indiana Journal ojPolitical Science, and the Indiana University Press -just to name a few, as well <br />as the many research grants which she has received <br />�'am, �, eybrp lba t�.ate �bmn,•n �r+ ane'ly�ofe +Q�y/Q(m(a�',d, .�ana, s1JbOee, <br />Section I. The Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, honors IU South Bend Political <br />Science Professor Elizabeth Bennion for her dedication and commitment to excellence in teaching; her many <br />community service projects; and a special thank you for being the moderator of the Town Hall Meetings <br />recently held on the proposed animal care and control ordinance proposed for the City of South Bend. <br />Section II. The South Bend Common Council is proud to recognize that Dr. Bennion believes in "being <br />the change you want to see in the world" - and is leading by example of this belief <br />ipg a difference. <br />Section III.
