The structure fulfills criteria #1 as excellent example of a very popular early 1900s style
of interior and architectural design. This design concept was based on a popular
movement away from machine-made ornaments to age-old honest craftsmanship and
integrity. It is exemplified in architecture by the use of natural elements such as stone
and half-timbers for walls and multi-paned glass windows. The house at 1304 Kessler
Place is a wonderful meshing of two similar 1900s styles, the Arts and Crafts style and
the Craftsman style. Together they create this unique, earthy abode, which is unlike any
other structure in the city of South Bend.
The structure fulfills criteria #2 by its integrity of construction and style with virtually no
alteration to its original fabric in over eighty years.
The structure fulfills criteria #3 by its association with Earl Jackson, a local attorney and
secretary of the Abstract and Title Corporation. Mr. Jackson was a prominent and well-
respected local businessman and veteran.
