Guards are required to assist the community's school children in crossing streets while enroute to and from their schools, and WHEREAS, it is frequently necessary for said school crossing guards to enter street intersections for the purpose of temporarily stopping or directing vehicular traffic so as to safeguard children crossing the street, and WHEREAS, the Common Council wishes to recognize the lawfulness of .the acts of the school crossing guards in directing traffic in the aforesaid manner and to extend to them every protection of the law while so engaged in their work. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ENACTED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE MUNICIPAL CITY OF SOUTH BEND THAT: 1. School Crossing Guards are any adult persons so designated by the South Bend Police Department and who serve in uniforms prescribed by the South Bend Police Department while engaged in the work of assisting the school children in the crossing of streets while enroute to and from their respective schools and homes. 2. School Crossing Guards shall be considered and are hereby declared to be an arm of the South Bend Police Department with the police power to enter streets and /or street intersections and to stop or to otherwise direct both vehicular and pedestrian traffic upon said street. j3.
