333 TONTI <br />HISTORICAL CONTEXT <br />This house was built in 1920 by Elias Strickland, an employee of the legal department at <br />Studebaker's. Shortly after completing construction of this Dutch Colonial style house <br />Mr. Strickland sold it to Henry Oest who in turn sold it to Deputy Attorney, Paul Paden <br />in 1923. Mr. Paden sold the property in 1926 to its first residents, Leo and Adelia Cook. <br />Mr. Cook was born in Elkhart in 1895 and married Adelia Fitzgerald in 1925. Leo <br />graduated from Notre Dame in 1918 and began practicing law in South Bend in 1919. <br />He also served as Deputy Prosecutor from 1942 to 1947. Mr. Cook resided at this <br />address until his death in 1965 at age 69; his wife sold the property a year later to Donald <br />and Georgia Tagmeyer Jr. Donald, a meat manager at Kroger, only owned the house for <br />a year, selling it in 1967 to Donald and Gail Miller. Mr. Miller was a teacher at St. <br />Mary's College, he and his wife lived in this house for twenty-four years, eventually <br />selling it in 1991 to the current owner, Sophia Jordan. Ms. Jordan retains ownership <br />although she moved to Chicago two years ago. <br />ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION <br />This property is described as lot 207 Park Addition to Navarre Place. It is located on the <br />north side of Tonti Street between Iroquis and N. Lafayette Streets. <br />This is a two-story Dutch Colonial Revival Style house with a square plan, concrete <br />foundation and exterior brick chimney. It has a gambrel roof with shed roof dormers that <br />have soffit overhang and fascia. The roof also has asphalt shingles and a skirt roof over <br />first story. The full front porch has a flat roof, with exposed rafter ends, brick piers, brick <br />base walls and concrete steps. The walls are brick throughout the first story and <br />clapboard in the second story. The windows are six over one double hung with lip mold <br />lintels and one half moon window in the front facade top peak. The property also <br />contains a single stall garage with clapboard siding and gable roof, located to the rear of <br />the property. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Based on the Historic Preservation Commission's Local Landmark Criteria's adopted by <br />the Common Council, the site and structure at 333 Tonti Street should be recommended <br />to the Common Council for designation as a Local Landmark by the Historic <br />Preservation Commission. <br />The building meets three of the criteria: <br />1) Its embodiment of elements or architectural design, detail, material or <br />craftsmanship which represents an architectural characteristic or innovation; <br />2) Its suitability for preservation; <br />~.~ <br />3) Its identification with the life of a person or persons of historical sgnificance~~.a ~,+~ ~, ^~~~, <br />S <br />bL~~A ~ ;; ?009 <br />2 ~~ <br />F LC :'~ J.:z'1:.; <br />
