TO: Members of the Common Council <br />RE: Chimney - -830 North Michigan Street <br />FROM: John L. Hunter, Superintendent of Utilities <br />We have submitted an ordinance requesting the removal of the chimney <br />at the North Pumping Station. This chimney no longer serves any <br />purpose at this location. The bid not only includes the removal of <br />the.chimney, but also debris removal and repair of the wall of the <br />building where the bridging is attached. <br />The most urgent need for removal is the safety factor. The chimney <br />is in bad need of tuckpointing, it needs steel bands and ackerman bolts <br />on the top of the chimney. If the chimney is repaired in lieu of re- <br />moval, it will cost $3, 250. There is every indication, unless steps <br />are taken in the near future, that the chimney could fall, particularly <br />from the top. <br />It is our opinion that the repair would be of a temporary nature, and <br />that removal is the better alternative. <br />Enclosure <br />
