ORDINANCE NO. <br /> AN ORDINANCE OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, <br /> INDIANA, AMENDING CHAPTER 2, ARTICLE 8, SECTION 2-121(a) OF THE <br /> SOUTH BEND MUNICIPAL CODE TO REINSTATE ONE NON-DESIGNATED <br /> HOLIDAY <br /> STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND INTENT <br /> The Common Council last amended Chapter 2, Article 8, Section 2-121(a) on December 10, <br /> 2012 when it recognized Martin Luther King's birthday as a designated City officer/employee <br /> holiday recognizing his significant contribution to the character of our community, thereby <br /> increasing the total number of designated City holidays from nine to ten, and eliminating the one <br /> non-designated holidav, of which Martin Luther King's Day had been one among several which <br /> City employees could select. (Ordinance No. 10211-12) <br /> At this time, in the interest of morale of City officers and employees and to better accommodate <br /> persons of all religions, the floating holiday will be reinstated by eliminating Good Friday as a <br /> designated holiday, and by permitting City employees to select any day of their choice as a <br /> "non-designated holiday", including Good Friday or any other day an individual officer or <br /> employee should choose. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE BE IT ORDAINED AND DECREED BY THE COMMON <br /> COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA as follows: <br /> SECTION 1. Commencing in calendar year 2014 Good Friday shall no longer be eligible <br /> for designated holiday status by the Board of Public Works when approving designated holidays <br /> for officers and employees of the City of South Bend. <br /> SECTION II. Chapter 2, Article 8, Section 2-121(a) of the South Bend Municipal Code <br /> shall be and hereby is amended to read as follows: <br /> Sec. 2-12). Holidays. <br /> (a) Officers and employees shall receive nine 9 ten (I ) designated holidays as <br /> approved by the Board of Public Works- and one (1) additional non-designated <br /> holiday which can be any day of the calendar year selected by each officer or <br /> employee . <br /> SECTION 111. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage <br /> by the Common Council and approval by the Mayor. <br />
