October 6, 1970
TO: Members of the Common Council
RE: Purchase of Truck Crane and Equipment
Wastewater Treatment Plant
FROM: John L. Hunter, Director of Utilities
Proper advertisement appeared in the South Bend Tribune and Tri-
County News for bids received September 8, 1970. The following bids
were received and referred to our office for recommendation:
COMPANY BID AMOUNT
Deeds Equipment Co., Inc.
Lawrence, Indiana $ 8,000.00
General Equipment & Machine Company
South Bend, Indiana 5,500.00
D. D. Kennedy, Inc.
Gary, Indiana 12,500.00
Equipment of the two lowest bidders was inspected by Frank Sailer,
Water Department, and Morgan Peck, Wastewater Division. Their opinion
is that the $8,000 bid of Deeds Equipment Company is the best. The
General Equipment & Machine Company unit is a 1957 model (three years
older than requested). It would cost more to repair this unit than
the $2,500 difference in bids. Also, when repaired it would not match
the 1960 unit offered by Deeds in quality.
The Water Works Board agreed with our recommendation and entered into
the attached contract.
This truck crane will be used by both Water and Wastewater personnel.
It will eliminate the necessity of hiring private contractors to do
repair work except on trunk sewers. It will particularly be valuable
in sewer repair work with depths in excess of 12 feet; and during the
downtown renewal project work.
John L. Hunter
