Hunter, Director of Utilities RE: Installation of Water Main on Sample Street Bridge Notice to Bidders appeared in the South Bend Tribune and Tri- County News on June 25 and July 2, 1971. Bids were received July 6 as follows: Rieth -Riley Construction Co., Inc. $ 5,900.00 Howell Construction Co., Inc. 13,997.00 The Board approved the bid of Rieth -Riley and entered into the con- tract on July 6, 1971. This sixteen inch main had to be removed from the Sample Street Bridge due to the improvements being made to this bridge. This contract calls for the main to be put back on the bridge. Rieth- Riley is the contractor for construction of the bridge. They have all of their equipment on the site and can do this installation in the normal construction of thxe bridge. This is the reason for their low bid of $5,900 in comparison to the other bid of $13,997. We are requesting,the Council to'suspend the rules on this ordinance so that Rieth -Riley can proceed with the installation of the pipe during their normal construction. By proceeding in this manner a savings of $8,097 will be realized. The bridge is at the point where a definite approval to proceed must be given to Rieth -Riley or the main installation will have to be postponed until the bridge is constructed. At that time the price will be in the area of the $13,997 bid by the other firm. I,,e would appreciate your suspending the rules and approving this contract.
