April 7, 1971 1 l
MEMO TO: Members of the Common Council
SUBJECT: Ordinance approving a contract to construct a sewage lift station
on North Michigan Street.
The Sewage Lift Station located on Michigan Street in front of the Northside
Water Pumping station was installed about 1954. Over the years, the station
has deteriorated to the point where the station is virtually.out of service.
In addition, the sewage load on the station has increased. To further complicate
the maintenance situation, the station is located in the northbound lane of U.S. 31
This makes service hazardous to Wastewater personnel and generally inconvenient
to motorists using the highway when the station is serviced.
At the request of Wastewater personnel, the situation pertaining to this lift
station was investigated. Engineering plans were subsequently developed and bids
taken for this station. Generally the characteristics of the new station are:
1. Increased capacity to handle even reasonable storm flows without
discharging sewage to the river.
2. The new station will be located in the front yard of the Northside
Pumping Station so that maintenance may be performed safely and with a minimum
of inconvenience to the public.
3. The new station will utilize pumps instead of pneumatic ejectors.
The reliability of the new system is believed to be very high.
Since the present situation in which raw sewage is being bypassed almost
continuously to the river is unreasonable, we recommend that the ordinance
confirming the contract to replace this pumping station be adopted.
David A. Wells
