RESOLUTION NO. 'A ZAk- -B <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, <br />INDIANA, HONORING CHARLES BUTLER FOR HIS ACTS OF HEROISM IN <br />RESCUING A PERSON FROM THE ENEMY OF FIRE AND SMOKE <br />v/W;ea4 the South Bend Common Council notes that since March 28, 1831, the date when the <br />original plat of the town of South Bend was recorded, that there have been countless acts of unsung <br />heroism by residents and non - residents who have helped shape South Bend's proud history; and <br />G%699vw the very fabric of our diverse community is based on persons who are selfless in their <br />daily actions and who do the right thing, especially in times of adversity; and <br />6A" the South Bend Common Council is proud to honor and commend a resident of our <br />neighboring City of Mishawaka, Charles Butler, who truly has become a local hero; and <br />1) the Common Council notes that around midnight on October 15, 2013, smoke and <br />flames were engulfing a home located at 1628 South Leer Street in the City of South Bend; and <br />6i Charles Butler just happened to be passing the home, and upon seeing the burning <br />structure took immediate action to rescue an elderly resident from the home before the South Bend Fire <br />Department firefighters arrived; <br />G Charles Butler made this rescue without any protective fire gear and was <br />miraculously able to rescue the resident, with neither sustaining any serious personal injuries. <br />i <br />Section I. On behalf of the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the Common Council is <br />pleased to publicly commend, honor and congratulate CHARLES BUTLER from the City of <br />Mishawaka for his selfless acts of heroism in rescuing a resident of South Bend from his burning home <br />on October 15, 2013. <br />Section II. The Common Council sincerely thanks CHARLES for his split section <br />decision to accept the risk and quietly and without fanfare save a p on's life, be ore the screaming <br />sirens sounded; for which all of us are forever grateful. _ y <br />Section III.
