Department of Publie Parks <br />Administration Building <br />St. Louis Boulevard at Wayne Street <br />South Bend, Indiana 46617 <br />PHONE: (219) 284 -9401 <br />February.5,1974 <br />Mr. Peter Nemeth, President <br />South Bend Common Council <br />County -City Building <br />227 West Jefferson Boulevard <br />South Bend, Indiana <br />Dear Mr. Nemeth: <br />The Board of Park Commissioners is hereby requesting the <br />Common Council to approve the enclosed ordinance to trans- <br />fer $125,000.00 from Account number 440.0, Materials to <br />Account number 730.0, Properties, Land. <br />The Park Board has options to purchase approximately twenty - <br />nine acres of land on Edison Road just west of Hickory Road, <br />now owned by the South Bend Community School Corporation for <br />$112.,500.00 (A down payment of $12;.500..00 has been paid for <br />the property). <br />The Board has received a petition from six hundred property <br />owners in the area requesting the Park Department to purchase <br />the land and develop it into much needed park and recreation <br />facilities. <br />The Park Department is aware of the shortage of open space <br />in this area of the city and feels that the open space should <br />be purchased at this time to preserve the area for future <br />park and recreation development. <br />The balance of the funds, $12,500.00, will be used to finalize <br />the purchase of 34.65 acres of land in the Belleville Gardens <br />area. Again, the Board received a petition from the property <br />owners in the area, requesting the Park Department to acquire <br />land for park purposes. The Park Department has made a down <br />payment of $22,500.00 for the land. <br />
