r
CITY OF SOUTH BEND
Reply To:
South Bend, Indiana 46601
.f -
South Bend. Bureau of Fire '
Jerry J.. Miller
Mayor 701 W. Sample Street
South Bend, Indiana 46621
G. Patrick Gallagher lic S November 12, 1974
Director, Public Safety - :
South Bend Common Council
County -City Building
South Bend, Indiana 46601
Honorable Council Members;
Engine # 4, located at 1240 W. Thomas Street, recently suffered an '
engine failure while returning from a run at the St. Joseph County
Airport. Subsequent tear -down of the engine by Fire Department
mechanics revealed a broken crank, shaft. Further investigation by an
engine rebuild firm found that the cylinder block had several cracks in
it and that this particular engine was unworthy of repair.
We have investigated the Possibility of repowering the vehicle with a
Diesel engine of the Detroit Cummins or Maxidyne varieties and find
that the rebuild on this particular unit might cost as high as $1o,000
to $12,000. In one instance, the engine was going to be entirely too
small to do the required work and was subsequently rejected. I might
aLL add that Councilman Kopczynski was very helpful in pointing this fact
out to us.
We have now located an engine rebuild facility in Atlanta, Georgia who
has a rebuilt engine of the same model and horsepower that was removed
from the pumper. It will be our job to install the engine and Its
various excessories.
Therefore, we are requesting the Common Council transfer the amount of
$5,000 from q -110,' OServices Personal to `C43q Council
Parts, in order
that we accomplish this most needed work. Your helpful cooperation
will be most greatly appreciated.
Very truly yours,
i
ck R. Bland, Fire Chief
SOUTH BEND BUREAU OF FIRE
JRB /emr
VC h
 SLR
ty p 7
