CITY OF SOUTH BEND
South Bend, Indiana 46601
Jerry J. Miller
Mayor
Rollin E. Farrand, Sr., P. E.
Director, Public Works
Members of the
441 County /City
South Bend, IN
Gentlemen:
Common Council
Building
46601
Reply To: Department
of Public Works
September 30, 1975
On October 6, 1975 we will be presenting an ordinance appropriating
$44,000 from the General Revenue Sharing Trust Fund for the purchase
of gasoline needed to meet anticipated usage for the balance of 1975.
In the approved budget for 1975 you granted us $170,000 to cover
gasoline and diesel fuel expenses. This, along with $20,000 from
the Water Works and $16,000 from the Bureau of Solid Waste, should
have covered our anticipated total usage based on the highest price
paid in 1974 (38.79¢ per gallon).
As you are aware, gasoline prices have continued to rise at a rate
greater than we had anticipated. We are presently at an average price
of 43 cents per gallon. We believe it would be fair to state that
this is due to increased prices rather than increased usage.
Our records show that gasoline consumption for 1974 was 525,421
gallons. We are projecting the 1975 usage to be 530,000 gallons
based on the first eight months consumption. We also can document
the usage in 1974 of 40,728 gallons of diesel fuel, while 1975 usage
is projected to be 63,500 gallons. This increase is due to the com-
pleted delivery of the Mack diesel - powered dump and snow plowing
trucks during 1974.
