Peter H. Mullen
Director, Administration and
Finance
L;pLUT /4'
F
CITY of SOUTH BEND
Z
PETER J. NEMETH, Mayor w
a
COUNTY -CITY BUILDING SOUTH BEND, INDIANA 46601
4010N
Members of the Common Council
4th Floor, County City Building
South Bend, Indiana
Dear Council Members:
October 6, 1976
219/284 -9742
There will be presented for your consideration on October 11, 1976,
an ordinance appropriating solid waste collection revenues for the
operation of the Bureau of Solid Waste for the year 1977.
I would like to point out that the budget proposed for 1977 is 17 per-
cent lower than that approved for 1976. This is made possible through
the utilization of CETA people for the extra board (union requirement)
and the decreased maintenance cost on equipment due to the up- dating
of our fleet.
It also becomes important that we economize wherever possible in view
of our difficult financial situation. Revenues versus expenses when
projected through December 31, 1977, reflect a deficit of around
$75,000.00 on operations.
We have attempted to economize in all ways possible. The assistant
mananger has been removed from the budget and been replaced by a clerk.
Our equipment replacement program is also at a point where we can re-
place units less frequently. Also with the use of new equipment, it
is possible to save on down -time and repairs.
It is our hope that through more efficient direction during 1977, it
will be possible to place the Solid Waste Program on a paying basis.
Please feel free to contact me for further i
oontr
llen
ion.
