NEMETH, Mayor <br />COUNTY -CITY BUILDING SOUTH BEND, INDIANA 46601 <br />Common Council <br />Building <br />46601 <br />August 3, 1977 <br />RE: R & S 94 - Michigan Street Improvements <br />Dear Councilmen: <br />219/284 -9251 <br />The attached ordinance requesting a total of $88,400 from the Cumulative <br />Capital Improvement Fund and the Local Road and Street Fund represents <br />the City's involvement in the proposed improvements for the Leeper Park <br />Bridge and the intersection of North Shore Drive with Michigan Street. <br />The Leeper Bridge over U. S. 31 has been in need of repairs for many <br />years. As a result of negotiations between City, County and State <br />Officials, certain improvements have been proposed for the repair and <br />rehabilitation of the Bridge itself. It has been established that the <br />County and State will bear the major portion of the cost of these im- <br />provements. Bids have been received by St. Joseph County for the re- <br />pairs to the Bridge, said bids totaling $121,461. Of this amount, the <br />"City's share" shall be $26,885. The balance, $94,576, shall be borne <br />by the Indiana State Highway Commission and St. Joseph County. <br />In addition to the above referenced repairs, new street lighting will be <br />required for the Bridge itself. Our estimate for the proposed lighting <br />system, which will be funded 100 per cent by the City, is $6,675. <br />In conjunction with these improvements, traffic signal and channelization <br />improvements have also been proposed for the intersection of Michigan <br />Street and North Shore Drive.
