Perkins Camp No. 25
June 18th, 1942
Harry 0. Perkins Camp "U.S.W.V. is conducting a campaign to induce the Navy -Dent. to name one of the new cruisers of
the U.S. Navy "South Bend" in honor of our city. We are contacting organizations and individuals in an effort to
secure their support and cooperation in this movement. So far the response has been very gratifying.
We believe South Bend is entitled to this recognition because of its historical background, its importance as an
industrial and commercial center; and the great amount of war supplies turned out by its industries large and small.
Its sons are serving in the armed forces of the U.S. in every land and on every sea; and its citizens are contribut-
ing freely of their efforts and substance in the fight for liberty.
Indiana has had only two cruisers named in honor of her cities; namely the Indianapolis and the Vincennes; one in
central and the other in the south part of the state; so the north section of the state is due for recognition in
this matter.
May we hope that your honorable body will add your support and cooperation in this movement by drawing up some form
of resolution or petition addressed to the Hon. Frank Knox, Secretary of the Navy, requesting that one of the new
cruisers be named for our city.
Thanking you for whatever aid you may be able to render in support of this movement we remain
Very truly yours
Cruiser "South Bend" Committee
Frank A.
