297 <br />12. 1942 <br />Be it remembered that the members of the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, met in regular session <br />in the Council Chambers of the City Hall, Monday, January 12, 1942, at 7:40 P.M. President William Pulaski and <br />Councilmen Richardson and Brannan were absent. Vice President Hull presided. The reading of the minutes of the <br />previous meeting was waived by agreement. <br />CaDMI NICATION <br />Marie H. Nelson, City Clerk <br />South Bend, Indiana <br />My dear friend-.. <br />UNITED STATES SENATE <br />November 28th, 1941 <br />In acknowledgement of the resolution passed by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, of which you sent me a <br />copy, let me assure you I shall give your views careful consideration in relation to proposed legislation requiring <br />registration under rules and regulations of the Federal government of sporting firearms. <br />Thank you very much for writing me. <br />Most sincerely, <br />aYMOND E. WILLIS <br />Councilman Heideman made a motion to place the communication on file. Councilman Bishop seconded the motion. Moti <br />carried. <br />A communication from Louise B. Maloney, Safety Chairman, Studebaker School, requesting a traffic light or police <br />officer at the intersection of Calvert and Fellows Streets during the noon for the protection of the children of <br />Studebaker.School, was read by the Clerk. Councilman McCarthy made° a motion to refer the communication to the <br />Board of Safety for action and said Board to give a report to the Council at the next regular meeting, and the Clerk <br />be instructed to acknowledge the letter stating that action would be forthcoming. Councilman Heideman seconded the <br />motion. Councilman McCarthy seconded the motion. Motion carried. <br />ORDINANCE <br />ORDINANCE TRANSFERRING THE AMOUNT OF FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS FROM THE <br />GENERAL FUND OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, TO THE BUDGET OF <br />THE CITY CONTROLLER AND APPROPRIATING SAID AMOUNT FOR THE PREPARATION <br />AND MAINTENANCE OF CIVIL DEFENSE. <br />The ordinance was given first and second reading. Councilman McCarthymade a motion that the ordinance be referred <br />to the Committee of the Whole for public hearing on January 26. Councilman Niezgodski seconded the motion. Motion <br />carried. <br />RESOLUTION <br />TO THE HONORABLE MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY: <br />THAT, whereas, there Have been numerous requests by the citizens of our local community for a shelter for those <br />persons patronizing the public bus facilities, and <br />WHEREAS, such accomodation is now lacking, and <br />WHEREAS, said persons should be provided such shelter for their protection:, <br />THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, that the Board of Public Works <br />and Safety of the City of South Bend, Indiana, shall make the necessary arrangements with proper representatives of <br />the Northern Indiana Transit, Inc. for the establishment of such shelter building for the proection of our citizens. <br />AND, the Board shall make a report of such arrangements to the Common Council at their earliest convenience. <br />Dated this 12th day of January, 1942. <br />GEO. HULL: <br />Mem er of the Common Council <br />Councilman McCarthy made a motion that the resolution be referred to the Board of Worts and the Board be requested <br />to investigate and submit a program for the betterment of the bus service and report to the Council at the next <br />meeting. Councilman Niezgodski seconded the motion. Motion carried. <br />Councilman Niezgodski made a suggestion that the traffic engineer investigate the suitability of portable traffic <br />signals for use in the vicinity of industrial plants. <br />There being no further business, Council adjourned at 7:58 P.M. <br />ATTEST: <br />ti`s. <br />
