COMMUNICATION: II
it
533 East Angella Boulevard
South Bend, Indiana
February 21, 1935
To the Honorable Member of the
Common Council of the City of South Bend.
Gentlemen: it
It has been called to my a- :tention that, in the interests of correct spelling, it has been asked
that the Council change the name of Angella Boulevard to Angela Boulevard. I would like to
submit the following Considerations to your honorable body:
i
1. Whether the street was originally named after Antonio Anguelle, lieutenant of La Salle in Ii
his famous expedition down the Mississippi, or after Mother Angela, superior at one time of the
Sisters of the Holy Cross, has no bearing on,the case. The Common Council no doubt knew in the
beginning who the street was to be named after, and they named the street Angella, with two 11's
and a final a, which did not agree with either of the two names. The exact spelling of proper
names varies, zs is shown by the fact that we have in South Bend a LaSalle Street named. after
La':'Salle, c-nd a street named Lafayette after the Marquis de la Fayette. There are many other
instances.
i!2. But since the Council did spell the name of thettreet with two "1's" it should not be
'changed, at least without indemnifying the residents on the street itself. In many cases these
have had dies made, stationary engraved, and documents drown upm in which the sheet was named
as the Council by ordinance agreed to Ppell it. There would not only be financi&l loss but
considerable trouble caused the residents if the name were changed, entirely apart from
sentimental considerations. The undersigned-is one of those who has built on the street under I
its old. name, and is strongly opposed to any change for merely academic reasons. No.sufficient
reason has been shown by those proposing tb alt::er- the_:name oft- the`-.: Street; °and-.. although-,it :m&.g
be said that the change proposed is a small. one, the trouble and expense caused would be exactly
• the same as if the proposed name were Moreau Boulevard, or any other entirely dif- ferent name.
In fact the needlessness of so slight a change would add to the annoyance caused.
May I therefore petition your honorable body that the proposed change be dropped from considera-
tion, as I believe was done once brfore; or that it be defeated, and that the rights of your
petitioners who have invested in property on Angella Boulevard and Angella Avenue be maintained.]
Respedtful.ly yours,
Henry C. Staunton
