Nelson, President <br />City Council, <br />2022 Portage ,Ave. <br />South Bend, Ind. <br />Dear Sir:: At our regular meeting.,, action was taken protesting the setting .of a forty cent, <br />per hour-wage scale for common labor*" <br />The union wage scale of the common laborers, fifty cents per hour, was accepted <br />asbthe prevailing wage scales on government-work heregand on a former ocassion the City count$ <br />appr6ved of fifty cents which ist the union scale,of the Common Laborers local union.#645- to <br />approve of a lower scale would be,to jeopardize.these workers. <br />Organized labor during these times of stress has txied'to maintain the Americam <br />standard of living , things are now on the upgrade, and wagesz are supposed to increase, instea <br />of decrease with;kriaies-increasing steadily fifty cents per hour is a very conservative wages <br />and it is hoped that the City Council, will not go- against its former position in this matter, <br />We hope for your co operation in ttLis.matter in behalf of the common laborers,, <br />Very respectfully, Edwin Turnockt President M.
