SOUTH. BEND,. I= IANA: <br />Mayor Hinkle's written reasons to the common council for removing me as controller were <br />accompanied by ugly insinuations.` <br />I promptly replied in a statement to the public, saying then, as I say now, that the <br />chief reason for Mayor Hinkle's action was my I repeated attempts to block his efforts to_protec <br />commercialized vice and gambling in South Bend.' <br />I said I would welcome an investigation" said them, and I repeat, that the public has <br />right to know the facts.' More than that, the public has a right to demand the facts.' To <br />conceal them is an injustice to the public. 2 It is an injustice to the democratic arty.` <br />Furthermore, the responsibility for any wrongful conduct of any member of the democratic <br />city administration rests primarily with the democratic partyx itself.' The party should not <br />hesitate to clean its own doorstepts if any such cleansing is necessary: <br />I stand ready_to present to the council written charges, according to law, as, a basis of <br />` investigation_ and action, x <br />involving official isconduot, of Mayor Hinkle and of A*' Long, me <br />of the Board . of Public Safety" <br />There should be no delay in bringing the facts to__- light, if justice is to be done.'
