<br />-The Hone" City Council, South Bend, Indiana.
<br />Gentlemen of-the Council:
<br />_- WHEAS_: The United States Government is obligated to pay in-1945 to-the World War
<br />Veterans the sum of $3,500,000,000:00 as adjusted compensation; and
<br />WHEREAS :'This money when distributed among the millions of the former soldiers
<br />scattered: all over the United States will approximate an average of $700:00 per person; a3
<br />HEREAS': this country is now in the throes of economic depression, and in
<br />consequence of it man* of the world war veterans -are now in sericRie financial troux2ble
<br />and in need of the necessities: of life, and such an .immediate distribution of said
<br />$3000,000,000:00 to so many men scattered over the entire country wilk tend to bring
<br />about the return of `prosperity to the _country at large and sof relief to thesoldiers
<br />in particular;
<br />WHEREAS : It has been reported that the President of-'the United States,, Herbert
<br />Hooverm is considering a recommendation, in a special message, to the United States--
<br />Congress the .*immediate payment of this money to the veterans instead of postmponing
<br />it to 19+5, under the adjusted: compensation law; and
<br />WHEREAS; .,The City Council of_:Sout4__Bend is-and ought to be interested in the welfare
<br />of the 0` ty and of its citizens, among whom are many former soldiers--
<br />MREFORE BE IT RESOLVED : that the Council of the City of South Bend, `Indiana, i$
<br />give official expression to the U: &I Senators from the State of Indiana and to the,
<br />Representative from the Thirteenth - Congressional District, to.the opinion that is very
<br />prudent and also urgent that they express themselves favorable to the legislation and
<br />do in their power all they case to.bring about the immediate payment of toe adjusted
<br />compensatidn to the veterans of the World War, instead of- waiting until 1945:
