REGULAR MEETING JULY 8, 2013

area. She wanted to emphasize that we are down 2/3, no bees no food. It’s real simple no bees
no food. By doing this we can bring our bees up to a normal level, we are not at a normal level
right now and she thinks that is really important. In China they have such a problem, that they
have people going out with paint brushes and pollinating them. She stated that she never wants
to see us at that point. She stated that people are asking why we need to have bees in the city,
put them out in the county, but the reality is that bees fly 3-5 miles. So what she does in her yard
is spray pesticides, and provide organic flowers and benefitting my neighbors who live 3-5 miles
away. So those bees are going to be helping the surrounding agriculture. She stated so out of
her optic view those bees are going to fly 3-5 miles and they need that larger area to help the
surrounding farmers. Bigger cities also have it and she is hoping that we are going to be great
innovators as we have with United Gardens. She thanked the Council for the opportunity and
reminded them with no bees there is no food.

Christopher Huff, 1831 College, South Bend, Indiana, stated that he wanted to speak in favor of
this bill. He stated that yes bee hives are out there already. He can verify that personally when
he had a tree taken down several years ago. The tree came down and there was a huge bee hive
and had no idea that it was there. So they are already here let’s get this passed.

There was no one present wishing to speak in opposition to this bill.

Councilmember Dieter made a motion for favorable recommendation to full Council concerning
this amended bill.
