NEW BUSINESS
4 1
Councilman Szymkowiak expressed concern over the parking restrictions to be enforced on Western Ave.
subsequent to the widening of the avenue by the State Highway Commission.
City Engineer, Lloyd Taylor read communications from the Indiana State Highway Commission, which
explained that the reason for the no parking restrictions was due to the fact that the improvement
was being paid out of Federal funds. In order to be eligible for the funds, the Indiana State Highway
Commission would have to comply with all restrictions issued by the Federal Government, one of which
stipulated that there would be no parking in this area.
Edward A. Olczak, Attorney, speaking in behalf of small businessmen on Western Avenue, supported Mr.
Szymkowiak's claim that the prohibition of parking would force small businessmen in that location out
of business. He also informed the Council that he had visited the Governor's office in Indianapolis
and been informed that since federal funds were no longer to be used, the Indiana State Highway Commission
would not now have to conform to the original restrictions. Mr. Taylor and City Attorney, Robert J. DuComb
stated they have had no communication to that effect. It was decided that Mr. DuComb would communicate
with the Indiana State Highway Commission requesting an official statement.
There being no further business to come before the Council, Councilman Allen made a motion to adjourn.
Councilman Geib seconded the motion. Motion carried. Time: 10:20 P.M.
ATTEST:
LERK
APPROVED:
PRESIDENT
0
