Our city is one of 242 communities <br />in the United States who have received this status for its "remarkable <br />commitments to bicycling ". <br />On March 11, 2013, the South Bend Common Council passed Ordinance No. <br />10223 -13. That ordinance established local safety regulations when passing <br />bicycles when operated in the City of South Bend city limits. <br />David Varner As of this year, the City's website "Bike South Bend" notes that the city has <br />Fifth District approximately 62.4 miles of bicycle lanes or routes established within the city <br />Oliver J. Davis limits which consist of multi - purpose paths separated by streets (15.0 miles) <br />Sixth District striped bike lanes (16.5 miles) and other designated on- street routes (30.9 miles). <br />Derek D. Dieter Perhaps due to the rising gasoline prices and an increasing focus on "going <br />At Large g <br />green ", South Bend like many other communities, is experiencing a growing <br />Gavin Ferlic number of persons operating mopeds. Unfortunately, some of the headlines this <br />At Large month published by the news media have been "8- Year -Old Run Over by Moped" <br />Karen L. White and "Moped Crash Tuesday Afternoon Leaves Man Dead ". <br />At Large <br />We are introducing the attached proposed ordinance. It is aimed at helping <br />protect the health, safety and welfare of our residents. <br />We have collaborated with the City Administration so that the best possible <br />regulations are being proposed. We have additionally reviewed regulations which <br />have been in effect in some other 2nd class Indiana cities. <br />
