w <br />REGULAR MEETING MAY 26, 1958 <br />REPORT OF BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY <br />To the Common Council: May 26, 1958 <br />In reply to your Directive dated May 13, 1958 of the Council's regular meeting, the following railroads were notified <br />to correct the conditions od. their crossings. <br />Indiana'Northern Railroad <br />Grand Trunk Western Railroad <br />Pennsylvania Railroad <br />New York Railroad System <br />New Jersey, Indiana & Illinois Railroad <br />Studebaker Packard Corporation <br />As yet,l have only received a reply from the New York Railroad System telling they will correct said condition within <br />the next few days. <br />AJS /mm <br />Sincerely, <br />/s /.Anthony J. S -724 MOTOR EQUIPMENT $28,000.00 <br />The Ordinance was given third reading and passed by a roll call vote of 7 ayes, 0 nays, 2 absent (Councilmen Hahn and <br />Muszynski). <br />ORDINANCE, FIRST AND SECOND_ READING: <br />AN ORDINANCE CONTROLLING THE OPERATION OF SELF. - SERVICE LAUNDRIES <br />The Ordinance was given first reading by title and second reading in full. Councilman Kroll made a motion that the <br />Ordinance be set for public hearing on June 9, 1958. Councilman Christmand seconded the motion. Motion carried. <br />COMMUNICATION: <br />Common Council of the City of South Bend May 23, 1958 <br />City Hall <br />South Bend, Indiana <br />ATTENTION: Honorable Stanley C..Korpal, President <br />Gentlemen: <br />Submitted herewith is a proposed minimum housing ordinance designed to replace our present Housing Code, Ordinance <br />No. 3989. <br />Our present code, which was adopted in 1953, has proved by experience to be inadequate in its provisions; to be cum- <br />bersome, inequitable, and inoperative in its Enforcement provisions; and to be in general conflict with existing <br />s.:tate enabling legislation. <br />The above items are so detrimental to our slum clearance program, that we have ignored its provisions and have been <br />accomplishing slum clearance throughout directly under the provisions spelled out in the attached state legislation. <br />
