1 <br />1 <br />ORGANIZATION MEETING <br />JANUARY 6, 1969 <br />Be it remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, met in the Council Chambers <br />in the City Hall, January 6, 1969, at 7:37 p.m. Mayor Lloyd M. Allen called the meeting to order. <br />The following Councilmen were present: Councilmen -at- Large: Mrs. Janet S. Allen and Gerald Reinke; <br />First District Councilman: William W. Grounds; Second District Councilman: Walter M. Szymkowiak; Third <br />District Councilman: Robert 0. Laven; Fourth District Councilman: John V. Wise; Fifth District Council- <br />man: Albert E. Palmer; Sixth District Councilman: Raymond Zielinski. Councilman -at -Large Fred D. Craven <br />was absent. <br />Mayor Allen greeted the City Council members and commended them on their work in the past year for their <br />diligence in legislative matters of the City of South Bend. He told them they had done an excellent job. <br />Mayor Allen said "It is no surprise to me how important the business of local government is in the spectrum <br />of government and I am more and more impressed with the importance of the legislative branch of local <br />government as I observe their views." He closed with the statement, "The community can be proud of what <br />you have done." <br />Mayor Allen then announced that the chair was then open for nominations for the position of President of <br />the Common Council. Councilman Albert E. Palmer nominated Councilman Robert 0. Laven for President of the <br />Common Council. Councilman William W. Grounds seconded the motion. Councilman -at -Large Janet S. Allen <br />made a motion that nominations be closed. Councilman Walter Szymkowiak seconded the motion. Motion <br />carried and Mayor Allen then instructed the Clerk to cast a unanimous ballot -for Councilman Robert O.Laven <br />as President of the Common Council. <br />Mayor Allen announced that nominations were now open for Vice - President of the Common Council. Councilman <br />Walter M. Szymkowiak nominated Councilman Fred Craven for the office of Vice - President. Councilman John <br />V. Wise seconded the.motion. Councilman John V. Wise made a motion that the nominations be closed. <br />Councilman Janet S. Allen seconded the motion. Motion carried and the Clerk was instructed by Mayor Allen <br />to cast a unanimous ballot for Councilman Fred Craven for Vice - President of the Common Council. <br />There being no further business to come before the Council, Councilman Janet Allen made a motion to adjourn. <br />Councilman William W..
