i <br />a, <br />ORGANIZATION MEETING JANUARY 3, 1972 <br />(ORGANIZATION MEETING <br />JANUARY 3, 1972 <br />BE IT REMEMBERED that the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana met in the Council <br />Chambers of the County -City Building on January 3, 1972 at 7:30 p.m. pursuant to a call for a <br />Special Meeting for the purpose of electing officers for the year 1972. The meeting was called <br />to order by Mayor Jerry J. Miller. The invocation was given by Reverend Gregory Green, Assistant <br />Pastor of St. Joseph's Church, 226 North Hill Street, South Bend, Indiana. <br />ROLL CALL <br />PRESENT: Councilmen -at -Large Frank Horvath, Peter J. Nemeth and Odell Newburn, <br />1st District Councilman Joseph T. Serge, 2nd.District Councilman Walter <br />M. Szymkowiak, 3rd District Councilman Terry S. Miller, 4th District <br />Councilman Roger 0. Parent, 5th District Councilman Robert G. Taylor, <br />and 6th District Councilman Walter T. Kopczynski. <br />(Mayor Miller announced that nominations were open for President of the Council. Councilman Serge <br />nominated Councilman Nemeth for President. Councilman Miller seconded the nomination. Councilman <br />Taylor moved that the nominations be closed and that a unanimous ballot be cast for Councilman <br />Nemeth for President. Councilman Horvath seconded the motion and it was carried unanimously. <br />Mayor Miller said that the new councilmen represent the type of leadership necessary to solve <br />the problems of our community. He continued, "the goals we have set will be accomplished. The <br />councilmen you have elected are going to work hard to solve the problems of our community. We <br />will need the help and prayers of everyone He then turned the gavel over to Council President <br />Nemeth. <br />(President Nemeth announced that nominations were open for Vice President. Councilman Horvath <br />nominated Councilman Szymkowiak for Vice President. The nomination was seconded by Councilman <br />(Kopczynski. Councilman Parent moved that the nominations be closed. Councilman Taylor seconded <br />the motion and it was carried. Councilman Newburn moved that a unanimous ballot be cast for <br />Councilman Szymkowiak for Vice President. Councilman Serge seconded the motion. Motion carried. <br />President Nemeth announced that nominations were open for Chairman of the Committee of the Whole. <br />Councilman Parent nominated Odell Newburn. Councilman Taylor seconded the nomination. Councilman <br />Serge moved that the nominations be closed. The motion was seconded by Councilman Horvath and <br />was carried. Councilman Taylor moved that a unanimous ballot be cast for Councilman Newburn for <br />Chairman of the Committee of the Whole. Councilman Kopczynski seconded the motion. Motion <br />carried. <br />President Nemeth thanked the Councilmen for the honor they had bestowed on him in electing him <br />President of the Council and thanked the members of the audience for attending the organization <br />meeting and for their help. He also extended the thanks of the Council to Mr. Richard J. <br />McDonald, City Chairman, for his part in the swearing-in ceremonies before the meeting convened, <br />and Mayor.
