REGULAR MEETING <br />JULY 25, 1983 <br />Be it remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend met in the Council <br />Chambers of the County -City Building on Monday, July 25, at 7:00 p.m. The meeting <br />was called to order and the Pledge to the Flag was given. <br />ROLL CALL Present: Council Members Serge, Szymkowiak McGann, Taylor, <br />Zielinski, Harris, Voorde and Beck <br />Absent: Council Member Crone <br />REPORT FROM THE SUB - COMMITTEE ON MINUTES <br />To the Common Council of the City of South Bend: <br />Your sub - committee on the inspection and supervision of the minutes would res- <br />pectfully report that it has inspected the minutes of the July 11, 1983, meeting of <br />the Council and found them correct. <br />The sub - committee, therefore, recommends that the same be approved. <br />/s/ Beverlie J. McGann <br />Council Member Serge made a motion that the minutes of the July 11, 1983, meeting of <br />the Council be accepted and placed on file, seconded by Council Member Zielinski. <br />The motion carried. <br />SPECIAL BUSINESS <br />RESOLUTION NO. 1080 -83 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH <br />BEND, INDIANA, CONGRATULATING UAW LOCAL NO. 5 ON THEIR 50TH <br />ANNIVERSARY. <br />WHEREAS, the Common Council recognizes that 50 years ago Studebaker Local 18310, <br />now Amalgamated Local 5, was born during the dark days of the Depression; and <br />WHEREAS, the original charter was signed on July 21, 1933 with a total membership <br />of 17 persons and grew to 1,900 members by the end of that year; and <br />WHEREAS, by 1949 the union grew in number to 23,000 members and grew in negotiating <br />strength and power; and <br />WHEREAS, over the years Local 5 has had a steadily changing and growing membership <br />which has fought hard for the labor movement; and <br />WHEREAS, Local 5's leadership, hardwork and united effort to work for better <br />working conditions, better wages and better communication between labor and management, <br />are true examples of the "Union With a Heart ". <br />NOW, THERFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, <br />INDIANA, that: <br />SECTION I. The Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, congratulates <br />UAW Local #5 on their 50th anniversary. <br />SECTION II. The Common Council recalls with pride the hard work and dedication <br />of the members of Local #5 in working hard for the many causes of the labor movement. <br />SECTION III. The South Bend Common Council, on behalf of all of the citizens of <br />South Bend wish all of the officers and members of UAW Local #5 continued success and <br />support in the years ahead. <br />SECTION IV. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after <br />its adoption by the Common Council and approval by the Mayor. <br />/s/ John J.Harris, Jr. <br />Member of the Common Council <br />A public hearing was held on the resolution at this time. Council Member Harris read <br />the resolution and presented it to Odell Newburn, President of Local 5. Odell Newburn <br />thanked the Council on behalf of their Board and Local 5. Council Member McGann made <br />a motion to adopt this resolution, seconded by Council Member Taylor. The resolution <br />was adopted by a roll call vote of eight ayes. <br />
