Addition <br />Block 4 Lots 5,6,7,8 and 36 feet West side <br />of the South half of Johnson's 2 acres <br />Lot is 60' x 198' <br />Vail's platted March, 1837 <br />Johnson's 2 acre platted December, 1859 <br />historical notes 17 75 <br />Chauncey Lawton purchased, from Orlando and Ella Palmer, portions of <br />Lots 5,6,7 and 8 of Block 4, Vail's Addition to South tend and an <br />adjoining portion of land known as "Johnson's.2 acres" in November, <br />1871. The Palmers had only purchased this land in July of 1871 from <br />Alexander Hull, a shoemaker. <br />Lawton was involved in various manufacturing firms and would seem to <br />have the wealth to build such a house that Hull did not. The Palmers <br />continued to ow,n the land adjacent to Lawton's on the West, which <br />would indicate any building they did was on that piece of land. <br />Lawton was an officer in a number of firms; Walworth & Lawton Manu- <br />facturing Co. (sash, doors, and blinds), Stone Pipe and Cement Co., <br />Phoenix Flour Mills. He was associated with the latter for the longest <br />time. In 1889, he tempora rily left South Bend, and soon after, his <br />daughter and her husband, Warren and Laura Lawton Stedman, moved in. <br />Members of the family lived at 405 W. Wayne until Charles Noel Stedman <br />(the son of Warren and Laura Stedman) died in 1944.
