UTILITIES May 29, 2013 3:30 P.M.
Committee Member Present: Valerie Schey, Oliver Davis, Henry Davis Jr.
Other Council Present: Tim Scott, David Varner, Gavin Ferlic, Derek Dieter
Citizen Members: Carol Davis
Others Present: Sarah Bodner, Dave Kline, Kurt Isaac, Erin Blasko
Agenda: Update AEP/ I & M Frequency of power outages
Council member Valerie Schey, chair of the Utilities Committee called this meeting to get an update on
the seemingly growing number of power outages in the city. Three representatives from Indiana
Michigan Power Company were present to make the presentation. Sarah Bodner, acted as their
spokesperson. She provided a company brochure (attached) and walked the Council through it to
explain I & M's culture, challenges and efforts to provide clean efficient, safe and affordable energy for
its customers. In the overview she drew particular attention to page 12 of the brochure which explains
the finances of the power company. The challenge, she said it today's environment of rising costs,
regulations and flat demand was to balance all these factors to provide a return on capital along with
safe, reliable, low cost power.
Valerie Schey tried to start the presentation to a more local problem focus. Sarah Bodner spoke of an
aging power generation, retaining, and transmission infrastructure that require increasing reinvestment.
Time constraints prevented additional questions requiring Valerie to adjourn at 3:52 P.M.
Respectfully Submitted,
t
Valerie Schey
Utilities Committee, Chairperson
