REGULAR MEETING <br />JANUARY 13, 1986 <br />RESOLUTION NO. 1389 -86 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH <br />BEND, INDIANA, COMMENDING THE SOUTH BEND FIRE <br />DEPARTMENT AND THE SOUTH BEND POLICE DEPARTMENT FOR <br />THEIR PERFORMANCE IN CONTROLLING THE JANUARY 8, 1986, <br />FIRE AT THE MAR MAIN ARMS AND THE JANUARY 10, 1986, <br />FIRE AT ROBERTSON'S WAREHOUSE <br />WHEREAS, on January 2, 1986, at 7:42 p.m., the South Bend Police Department <br />Communication Center received notification of a fire at the Mar Main Arms apartment <br />building; and <br />WHEREAS, the Mar Main Arms apartment building serves as residence for more than <br />100 residents, the majority of whom are elderly; and <br />WHEREAS, the lives and property of the residents of Mar Main Arms were in <br />jeopardy as a result of the fire; and <br />WHEREAS, in spite of extreme weather conditions, members of the South Bend Fire <br />Department and the South Bend Police Department through their immediate response and <br />unstinting efforts and without concern for their own personal safety, evacuated the <br />building, brought the fire under control, prevented loss of life and minimized <br />damages to the building and its contents; and <br />WHEREAS, the South Bend Common Council wishes to commend Fire Chief Luther <br />Taylor, the Assistants Chiefs and the individual Firemen who responded to the Mar <br />Main alarm along with Chief Charles Hurley, the Assistant Chiefs, the sworn police <br />personnel who responded to the Mar Main Alarm and the personnel who responded to the <br />Mar Main alarm and the personnel of the South Bend Police Department Communication <br />Center who handle the dispatch duties; and <br />WHEREAS, on January 10, 1986, at 6:03 a.m. the South Bend Police Department <br />Communication Center received notification of a fire at Robertson's Warehouse <br />building; and <br />WHEREAS, the Robertson's Warehouse fire was an extra alarm fire which threatened <br />to destroy the entire building which is a part of the East Race Redevelopment area; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, both the South Bend Fire Department and the South Bend Police <br />Department once more performed valiantly in spite of inclement weather and early <br />morning traffic in order to provide for public safety, contain the fire and minimize <br />damage to the property; and <br />WHEREAS, the South Bend Common Council wishes to commend Fire Chief Luther <br />Taylor and Police Chief Charles Hurley, their Assistant Chiefs and the individual <br />members of the Fire and Police Departments for their performances at the Robertson's <br />Warehouse fire. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, <br />Indiana, as follows: <br />SECTION I. The Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, hereby <br />publicly commends Fire Chief Luther Taylor and Police Chief Charles Hurley along <br />with all members of their departments whose response and efforts help to avert <br />potential disaster at the Mar Main Arms apartment building and to avoid the total <br />destruction of property at the Robertson's Warehouse building. <br />SECTION II. The Common Council of the City of South Bend recognizes the <br />commitment and dedication with which the members of the South Bend Fire Department <br />and the South Bend Police Department performs their duties in spite of severe <br />weather and other adverse conditions. <br />SECTION III. This resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after <br />its adoption by the Common Council and approval by the Mayor. <br />s/ Joseph T. Council Members Serge and <br />Taylor presented the resolution to the Police and Fire Departments, after Council <br />Member Taylor read the resolution. Mayor Parent signed the resolutions and <br />commended both departments. T.
