Upon a motion by Mr. Washington, seconded by Ms. Pfotenhauer, the Authority
approved the Affidavit of Officer of South Bend Redevelopment Authority.
b. Authority approval requested for Resolution No. 155 Renaming and Rededicating
the Morris Civic Plaza as the "Jon R. Hunt Plaza."
Mr. Inks said the Plaza will be dedicated September 3 in a public ceremony. Since
the Authority owns the property it will be authorizing the renaming of the Plaza.
Mr. Alvarez asked what the Morns Plaza had been dedicated in memory of? Ms.
Pfotenhauer suggested it may have been named after Ella Mae Morris. Ms. Cheryl
Greene said she has been researching the records and has not come across
anything that shows it was formally designated, but rather it has commonly been
known as that area. The resolution then changes the name from the common name
to the formal name of the Jon R. Hunt Plaza. Ms. Greene has also. drawn up
approving resolutions for the Common Council and the Redevelopment
Commission. Mr. Alvarez asked if the plaza was called the Morris plaza by
extension of the Morris Civic. Ms. Pfotenhauer asked if Mrs. Raclin is aware of
the dedication. Mr. Inks said he will check with the Mayor's office to make sure
they have talked to Mrs. Raclin. Ms. Pfotenhauer said the property would have
been created from the Michigan Street right-of--way when the street was closed in
the eighties. Ms. Greene said it was part of the right-of--way and perhaps part of
St. Joseph. Ms. Greene was surprised that the Authority owned the land, and Ms.
Pfotenhauer said it was probably because the Authority financed the property.
Upon a motion by Mr. Washington, seconded by Mr. Alvarez, and unanimously
carried, the Authority approved Resolution No. 155 Renaming and Rededicating
the Morris Civic Plaza as the "Jon R. Hunt Plaza" subject to verification by the
Mayor's Office that they have discussed this matter with the Raclin family, and
that the history of the owner ship is tracked down.
4.
