Vinyl Siding Proposal for 523 S Saint Joseph St,
South Bend, IN
Submitted by Edgar Medina, Homeowner
This document presents the case for installing vinyl siding on the historic residence located at 523 S
Saint Joseph St, South Bend, Indiana. The home currently features fiber cement shingles with
underlying lead-based paint. The proposed change prioritizes safety, long-term preservation, and
compatibility with the neighborhood’s established architectural character.
Neighborhood Context
Out of the 13 houses on our street: 5 homes feature wood siding 5 homes feature vinyl siding 3 homes
feature fiber cement siding (including our home) This mix demonstrates that vinyl siding is already a
prevalent and compatible material within the streetscape. Notably, the historic Wilson residence
immediately adjacent to our property also has vinyl siding, further reinforcing the material’s compatibility
with the neighborhood’s character.
Compatibility with Historic Character
According to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation, exterior modifications should
respect the original character of the building and maintain compatibility with neighboring properties. The
presence of multiple historic homes with vinyl siding demonstrates that the proposed material does not
diminish the architectural integrity of the street.
